It is that time where a new academic year is starting, a new season is beginning and fresh fashion is hitting catwalks across the globe. But what does that mean for our wardrobe? Being a student (student loan is approaching) and working part time in retail, there is no doubt I am excitedly eager to shop the newness that has graced the high street. My role in work has become more creative with a focus on dressing and styling mannequins, which I absolutely love but putting outfits together doesn’t help my urge to shop. One thing I have noticed is that some trends have unexpectedly outlasted the shift in weather, one being the kimono.
Seemingly a summer trend, teamed with bikinis and cropped tops dominating summer snaps, during peak time the kimono also dominated sales, with New Look selling a kimono a minute according to LOOK Magazine’s August 2014 issue. So what changes have been made to make this statement item transition seamlessly into A/W? Not much! Heavier fabrics and deeper colours have been used but fringing and floral prints stay intact. I bought my kimono (pictured above) around August, but there is no doubt it will stay on trend throughout the winter months with the maroon tones and grey detailing. During summer I mostly wore it with the matching pattern shorts as a co-ord look, but now I team it with high waist jeans and a printed or acid wash top, it all depends on the styling.
Wearing all black with your kimono will exaggerate the print making it the statement item. Achieve this style by teaming your kimono with a plain black dress, TOPSHOP have a very similar dress to this priced at £30. It is always better to go for quality when purchasing simple separates because they will be your best friend when outfit matching. Hunt out your best oversized black bag to give this look a grunge edge. Enhance with zip trimmings like this bag from ASOS priced at £35.
This outfit inspo will give your kimono an ultra trendy revival. To rock this style hoke out your worn out lace up boots, a plain black tee and layer it with these adorable denim dungarees from MISSGUIDED priced at just £25. Finish the look with a black sophisticated back pack from NEWLOOK for £22.99, I call it a back pack for the working woman, they are so sleek! Don’t have a pair of old pair of lace up boots? NEWLOOK have these too, try this black pair with a quirky knit cuff for £27.99.
Feel free to share your go to transitional item this season…long live the kimono!
